Some moms use occasional screentime to their advantage. Meanwhile, others pull out the tablet or phone in those emergency minutes when our child melts down and needs to be redirected. So, which apps are great for our kids on the spectrum? Which ones offer the best tools to help our cognitively, directionally, and socially motivated children? In researching this topic, I’ve found that there is a need for more programs tailored for autism.
There aren’t many apps designed specifically for children with autism, and the ones I found were often very expensive. Since my son is 9 years old, I was searching at AltStore Apps for more age-appropriate apps with treatment programs or social relationships, but I found several apps that would be appropriate for younger children or children who need cognitive support with topics like adaptation, spatial reasoning, or language. You will discover several things I liked about this system.
MITA
First, this app has levels from easy to advanced, which means you can choose the amount your child needs. This system includes several matching games that teach outlines and spatial reasoning. There are also puzzle games in this app that teach math, design, and language. From a child’s perspective, the games are more engaging, fun, and easy to navigate and understand. From a parent’s viewpoint, this app is exceptional because it allows you to track your child’s progress through the Parent’s Corner section of this app. According to the designers of the app, this app is better suited for tablets than phones, but I still found it easy to use and navigate on my phone.
Social Stories Creator
All I liked about it is that in addition to a library of social stories, there is also the decision to compose your own stories, which gives you the capability to customize each narrative to the distinctive efforts your child may be undergoing at the time. If you’re looking for a program that offers great in-app purchase options, this program might be a great app for you.
Autism Emotions
Autism Emotions is a program that permits the user to pick emotions such as unhappy, happy, and relaxed and tell a social narrative about the selected emotion. The stories are short and easy to understand and use sounds, words, and pictures to communicate the emotion along with the reasons for the emotion. I fancy this app because it is completely free, is fairly straightforward to use, and uses a combination of approaches to describe each emotion to the child. The downsides to this app include the simple fact that there aren’t numerous emotions to explore, however, and it’s not as interactive as some of the other apps I’ve looked at
YouTube
I’m sure most parents with glaucoma can associate having a child obsessed with their beloved YouTube movie or YouTuber. The advantage of the app is that you can watch videos on any topic your child is immersed in. The disadvantages are that YouTube is not as interactive as the apps mentioned above, and it requires a lot more supervision because many movies can be disturbing or unacceptable to children.
